Abstract

Abstract

In spite of its simple structure, the mirror, which moves the narcissist feelings, thoughts and behaviors of the viewer, is an important object frequently used by artists in every period because of having rich metaphors. The artist's interest in the mirror is not limited to reflecting the image. The mirror has always been an unusual object of use for artists because it allows the creation of thousands of metaphors. The focus of contemporary artists is to provide the opportunities of the mirror for compunding the important concepts of arts such as reflecting, replicating and interpreting the space and the object. With an interdisciplinary approach, in the search for new and alternative materials of the contemporary art, the artists also benefited from the technology and set out from the mirror and feature art works that have not been used until today. Different reflections of the mirror in art can be seen in installation, sculpture and even in architecture. The artists, with different reasons, still show great interest in the mirror either as an artwork or a material used in the construction of the artwork. As the social structure of the periods changes, the meanings loaded for the mirror and the used way change spontaneously. Today, the mirror has been accepted as an object with a shiny surface in addition to all these past features, and has become a magical object that allows inter-space (interior - exterior) transitions. The artists such as Anish Kaapor, Leandro Erlich, Michelangelo Pistoletto etc moved the project to a new dimension that created a sense of virtual reality. As long as the mirror maintains its importance as an object of use in everyday life and does not interfere with the life of art, the mirror, whatever the arguments and instruments of art, will continue to be one of the indispensables of art, just like all other objects, adding new dimensions to its meaning or evolving into completely different forms.
