Abstract

Abstract

The Hittites went down on history as a state which gathered different cultures under a single roof in the Anatolian geography. In the Hittite state’s becoming a prominent political power, especially in Central Anatolia, not only the fact that it was influenced by the socio-economic, political and cultural structures of the societies which had lived before and were living in the same period, but also the variety which was offered by the Anatolian geography became effective. The Hittite State, which was founded in Anatolia, was a quite fortunate state in terms of its flora; because Anatolia, with its location between Asia and Europe, has a wide variety of plants in the Euro-Siberian, the Mediterranean and Irano-Turanian floral zones, and is located in the fifth richest floral region of the World. Benefiting from the variety of plants which the Anatolian geography offered, Hititians recorded the names of the plants they used in their inscriptions. The cuneiform tablets which were obtained from Hittite cities in different regions of Anatolia and written in such fields as fortune-telling, medicine-pharmaceutics, sorcery and law contained in detail not only the names of those herbaceous plants but also their areas and purposes of use. This particular article comprises of general information about some herbaceous plants which grew in Anatolia of the Hittite period, and some evaluation about floral changes which extends from the Hittite period to today’s Anatolia. In addition, the usages of the plants mentioned in the article will be referred to, and a comparison will be made with their present day usages, where possible.
