Abstract
18.yy’da Osmanlı’da Batılılaşma eğilimleri, Batı karşısında gerilemenin önüne geçmek için zorunlu bir refleks olarak ortaya çıkar. Ancak bu refleks beraberinde Batı’nın nasıl alınması gerektiği noktasında bir takım tartışmaları da getirmiştir. Özellikle bu tartışma kültür ve medeniyet alanında gizlidir. Buradaki kültür ve medeniyet yalnızca sosyolojik bir kavram analizinden ibaret değildir. Bu kavramların nasıl ele alınacağı bir milletin yaşam şekline yön vererek onu yeniden icat ya da reforme edilmesi düşünülen bir kalıba sokar. Diğer bir ifadeyle ona yeni bir kimlik sağlar. İşte çalışmada, bu kimliklerin nasıl inşa edilmeye çalışıldığı, inşa edilmesi düşünülen kimliklerin kuramsal olarak etno-sembolcü ve modernist yaklaşımlarla nasıl okunabileceği ve bu farklı kimliklerin tek bir çatı altında nasıl nitelendirilebileceği incelenecektir.

Abstract
Westernization movements in the Ottoman Empire emerge as a necessary reflex to avoid decline against the West in the 18th century. However, this reflex has brought some debates at the point of how should be taken the West. Especially this debate is hidden in the field of culture and civilization. The culture and civilization here is not just a sociological analysis of concept. How these concepts will be addressed by directing the way of life of a nation put a mold thought abouth anew invention or reform on it. In other words, it gives him a new identity. In this work, it will be examined how these identities are tried to be constructed, how can be read theoretically with the ethno-symbolist and modernist approaches of the identities that are thought to be construct and how these different identities can be characterized under one roof.
