Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, üniversite öğrencilerinin finansal durumu ile mutluluğu arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırmaktır. Finansal açıdan daha rahat olan öğrencinin daha mutlu olacağı ve gerek akademik gerekse sosyal başarılarının bundan etkileneceği hipotezleri son dönemdeki çalışmalarda karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın önceki yazına katkısı ise, öğrencinin finansal durumunu anlamak için seçilen ölçüt ve öğrencinin hissettiği umut(suzluk) etkisinin analizlere dahil edilmesidir. Umutsuzluğun ölçümünde öğrencilerin gelecekle ilgili duyguları, beklentileri ve motivasyon kaybı boyutlarını içeren, etkinliği önceki yazında kanıtlanmış bir ölçek kullanılmıştır. Ankete katılan öğrencilerin ortalama mutluluk puanı, en düşük gelir seviyesi için 2,94 ve en yüksek gelir seviyesi için 6,06 olarak bulunmuştur. Öğrencilerin ailelerinin aylık toplam gelir düzeyi ile öğrencilerin mutluluk puanı arasında pozitif korelasyon (P: 0,000) tespit edilmiştir. Ortalama mutluluk puanı kız öğrenciler için 4,90, erkek öğrenciler içinse 5,27’dir. Erkek öğrenciler daha mutludur ve cinsiyetler arasındaki mutluluk farkı istatistiksel olarak anlamlıdır (P:0,043). Umutsuzluğa ilişkin cinsiyet etkisi gözlenememiştir. Çok değişkenli doğrusal regresyon modelinde gelir ve umutsuzluk, öğrencilerin mutluluğundaki değişkenliğin %28,7’sini açıklayabilmektedir. Bulgular, öğrencilerin gelecekle ilgili duygu ve beklentileri konusunda destekleyici girişimlerin önemini vurgulamaktadır.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the relationship between university students’ financial status and their happiness. Recent studies build hypotheses based on the expectation that students who are financially more comfortable are more likely to feel happier and perform better both academically and socially. The contribution of this study to the existing literature lies in its measurement of students’ financial status and in including the hope(lessness) factor in the analysis. In order to measure the students’ hopelessness, a well- studied and proven scale, comprised of questions regarding individuals' feelings and expectations about the future and loss of motivation, was used. The average happiness score of students surveyed is 2.94 for the lowest and 6.06 for the highest income group. There is a positive correlation between families’ monthly total income and happiness score of the students (P: 0.000). The average happiness scores for female students and male students are 4.90 and 5.27, respectively. Male students are happier and the difference between genders is statistically significant (P:0.043). However, the gender effect in terms of hopelessness is not statistically significant. In the multivariate linear regression analysis model, income and hopelessness together explain 28.7% of the variation in the students’ happiness. Findings underline the importance of supporting students in building their expectations for the future.
