Abstract

Abstract

In today’s world, conditions that are currently subject to a number of developments and changes require innovations of any kind in the field of education, and thus countries are forced to update their education programs used and their aims expected from the program. The conditions above-mentioned also require countries to develop their programs creating some applications that measure certain international skills. The PISA application, which is one of the international examinations, also measures students’ level and proficiency of mathematics, science and their literacy performances. Turkey's low success in the PISA application has initiated academic circles to launch studies on education to find the reason for this apparent failure. The aim of this study is to study the questions in terms of PISA mathematics proficiency levels in the field of geometry and measurement learning in mathematics textbooks and mathematics-based applications prepared for 7th and 8th grade students in parallel with the 2020-2021 academic year expectations accepted by the Board of Education and taught in secondary schools. During the examination of the books, the questions were analyzed with the PISA mathematics proficiency scale. In the research, the document analysis technique, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used. A total of four books, each of which is a MEB publication, 7th and 8th grade mathematics textbooks and mathematics applications textbook and analyze 347 geometry questions. The results obtained indicated that there existed 3rd level questions in 7th and 8th grade mathematics textbook and 4th level questions in 7th and 8th grade mathematics application-textbook. In addition, the research results also showed that the number of 2nd level proficiency questions in mathematics books and 3rd level proficiency questions in mathematics applications books is quite high. One other result of the research is that there are not enough questions at 1st, 5th and 6th levels in the books examined. In this context, it may be beneficial to include the questions in the textbooks in proportion to the high-level and low-level questions in accordance with the objectives of the curriculum.
