Abstract

From ancient times to the present, "the tree of life" is the remarkable one of the Turkish cultural elements. It has been attributed important meanings to it. "Tree of life" connecting each other sky and ground and underground is a fundamental element of many Turkish mythological tales, shamans are reborn in its body, it accompanies dead ones' souls while their journey to the sky, and the souls of babies stopover on its branches just before the delivery. After Turks became Muslims, it has been given many different names like the Tuba tree, holy tree, and tree from the garden of Eden, and it continues to have an important role.

Also, it has an important role in the Alevi Culture which preserves ancient Turkish traditions by living in them. The figure of the tree of life can be seen intensively on the tombstones in the graveyard of the villages of the Sivas-İmranlı region whose population has Alevi beliefs. With the help of field study and literature search techniques, it has been detected the tree of life figures as well as many other symbols in the eighteen different village graveyards in the district.

The tree of life figure in traditional Turkish art is also the center of interest in the contemporary one. Many modern artists inspired by traditional art have approached this symbol distinctly. In this paper, it has been studied Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu, Can Göknil, Aydın Ayan, and Mustafa Pilevneli how they used and construed the figure of the tree of life and what they contributed to the Turkish art by using it.

The figures of the tree of life that have a wide spectrum of size and shapes on the tombstones in the region of İmranlı have important roles as being a source of new ideas for contemporary art and being a heritage to society. These are our legacies and precious stones that must be protected.
