Abstract
Urfa Osmanlı Devleti içinde eğitim açısından önemli bir yerleşim yeridir. Özellikle medrese eğitimi ve daha sonraki yıllarda batı tarzı okulların açılması ile Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’ne geçişte il eğitim açısından önemli bir yere sahiptir. Cumhuriyet’in ilanı ile birlikte Türk Ulusunun siyasi, sosyal, ekonomik ve hukuki yapısında olduğu gibi eğitim alanında da önemli gelişmeler olur. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, gerçekleştirdiği inkılapların halk tarafından anlaşılması ve benimsenmesi, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin muasır medeniyetler seviyesine çıkması açısından eğitime daha büyük bir önem göstermiş, bu kapsamda ülkenin çağdaş ülkeler seviyesine ulaşabilmesi için milli ve laik bir eğitimi hedeflemiştir. Bu araştırma nitel araştırma deseninde doküman analizi metodu içinde tarama tekniği kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışma Osmanlı Devleti’nin son döneminde ve Türkiye Cumhuriyeti sürecinde Devlet İstatistik Enstitüsü Nüfus Sayımı Verileri ve Devlet Planlama Teşkilatı verileri kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmada Cumhuriyet Dönemi’nde Urfa’da eğitimin tarihi gelişimi, okuryazar oranı, okul ve öğrenci sayıları, okul ve öğretmen başına düşen öğrenci sayıları, eğitim alanındaki gelişmeleri içeren verilerle sonuca varmak amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmanın sonunda Cumhuriyet Dönemi’nde Şanlıurfa’da eğitim göstergelerinin Türkiye ortalamasına göre gelişimi ile bu göstergelerin Urfa’nın gelişimine etkisine yer verilmiştir.

Abstract
Urfa is an important settlement place in terms of education within the Ottoman State. Especially in later years madrasa education and the transition to Western-style Republic of Turkey with the opening of school education has an important place in the province. As well as being in the political, social, economic and legal structure of the Turkish nation along with the declaration of the Republic, there will also be significant developments in the field of education. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the understanding by the public of the reforms carried out and adoption of the Republic of Turkey contemporary civilization has shown a greater emphasis on education in terms of the rise to the level aimed at a national and secular education to achieve the modern countries' level of the country in this regard. This research was carried out using a scanning technique in the document analysis method in the qualitative research design. Working during the last period of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey in the process of State Institute of Statistics Census was carried out using data and State Planning Organization data. The aim of the study was to reach the final result of education in Urfa during the Republican Period, including literacy rate, school and student numbers, number of pupils per school and teacher, and developments in education. Sanliurfa education indicators in the end of the study period, with the development of the Republic of Turkey according to the average of this indicator is given to the effect on the development of Urfa.
