Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify the views of classroom teachers implementing the Turkey's Century Education Model (TYMM) Turkish Language Curriculum on early literacy instruction. Conducted using a basic qualitative research design, the study involved 26 classroom teachers who implemented the TYMM for the first time during the 2024–2025 academic year. Data were collected through semi-structured interview forms and analyzed using descriptive analysis technique. According to the research findings, the play-based preparatory activities as well as breathing and eye-hand coordination exercises included within the TYMM were regarded by the majority of teachers as supportive of students' school adjustment, while digitally supported instructional materials were reported to facilitate the early literacy acquisition process. In contrast, the modification of the phoneme teaching sequence was identified as a factor that complicated the process for all students, whereas the removal of syllable tables and the consequent reduction in instructional scaffolding had a particularly adverse impact on students progressing at a slower pace. However, it was also found that these changes accelerated reading acquisition in certain classrooms where students demonstrated higher levels of school readiness. Finally, the limitation of in-service training to theoretical content delivery and inconsistencies among trainers emerged as a significant systemic concern. Based on the findings, the study recommends permitting flexible and differentiated scaffolding practices in syllable instruction, revising early literacy materials in accordance with readability principles, and restructuring in-service training programs as applied, long-term mentorship processes.
