Abstract

Abstract

Many of researches on individualism and collectivism have been conducted in social and cross-cultural psychology and conceptualization has been put forward. Triandis makes the distinction between horizontal and vertical individualism/collectivism. The self in vertical collectivism is perceived as part of a society based on inequality. In the horizontal collectivism, the self is part of a community where group members are perceived as equal. Vertical individualism, acceptance of autonomous individual and inequality; horizontal individualism consists of an autonomous individual and an emphasis on equality. Self-esteem is about how individuals feel themselves valued. Narcissism; is a personality that is characterized by seeing yourself superior to others, entering into expectation of respect and admiration by others. In light of literature the aim of this study is to examine whether horizontal and vertical individualism / collectivism predict self-esteem and narcissism or not. The aim of this study, a path model containing the relations of the variables was developed and tested in the analysis of the data. The study group consisted of 349 university students and teachers (71.3% female, 28.7% male). The primary analysis shows that horizontal and vertical individualism / collectivism predict narcissism and self esteem.
