Abstract
Sir Gawain ve Yeşil Şövalye, on dördüncü yüzyıl sonlarında yazılmış, anonim bir Orta çağ İngiliz Edebiyatı şiiridir. Temel olarak şiir, kültürü temsil eden Gawain ve doğayı temsil eden Yeşil Şövalye isimli iki rakip şövalye hakkındadır. Bu dikotomi şairin Gawain’i test etme amacını güçlendirmek için kullandığı “ormanı” görünür bir figür olarak şiire yerleştirmiştir. Ormanın dış dünya olarak bu kadar belirgin olması, şiirdeki iç ve dış dünya arasındaki bariz farkı da belirginleştirmektedir. Orman, suçluların ve şeytani yaratıkların yaşadığı tehlikeli bir yer olarak görülmektedir. Bu yüzden ormana gitmek, düşmanları yenmek, zorlukların üstesinden gelmek o dönemlerde bir şövalyeyi onurlu yapan özelliklerdir. Orta Çağ’ın orman hakkındaki bu güçlü algısını göz önüne aldığımızda, Gawain’in şairinin de kendi döneminin düşünüş tarzını eserlerine yansıtması kaçınılmazdır. Bu çalışma Orta Çağ’daki orman imgesinin şiire nasıl yansıdığını araştırmıştır. Ayrıca bu imgenin Gawain’in sadakatini sınamak için kullanıldığını ve ormanın onun karakteristik özelliklerini değiştirdiğini tespit etmektedir. Bu tespitler şiirden alıntılarla desteklenmiştir. Orman imgesini incelemek için imgebilimsel bir yaklaşım seçilmesinin sebebi ise bu alanın “Öteki”yi anlamamızı sağlamasıdır. Yapılan çalışmada ise Öteki, medeniyetin karşıtı olarak görülen “Orman” olmuştur.

Abstract
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is an anonymous Medieval English Literature poem dates back to the late fourteenth century. Basically, it is about two knights who are obviously rivals, with Gawain representing culture and Green Knight representing nature. This dichotomy places forest on the poem as an eminent figure used by the poet to strengthen his point, that is, to test Gawain’s loyalty. Using forest as an eminent figure this much in the poem crystalizes the obvious difference between inside and outer world. Forest was perceived as dangerous and a place for criminals and evil creatures to dwell in That is why, going into the forest, overcome enemies, get through hardships make a knight honorable at that time. Considering this strong perception in medieval era, it is inevitable for Gawain’s poet to reflect his time’s way of thinking on his works. This study explores how the forest image in medieval era reflected on the poem. Besides, it discusses that the image of forest used to test Gawain’s loyalty, and that the forest changes his character traits, as well. These findings are supported by quotes taken from the poem. The reason why imagology is chosen for our purpose of analyzing forest image is that it enables us to understand “the other”. In our case, the other would be the forest, with the reason of its being considered as the opposite of civilization.
