Abstract

Abstract

Students spend most of their time in schools. By the time they complete compulsory education, they will have spent thousands of hours at school. The same situation is true for teachers and administrators, too. Instead of designing or organizing the educational environments in a way that activates the students, teachers and administrators prefer to comply with the existing order, bringing students to experience a learning process in which the traditional understanding is dominant and the teacher is in the center. However, John Dewey (1859-1952) suggested that education should be based on a broader concept, which means the life process that students learn by doing-living and interacting with each other (cited in Alexander, 2000). However, similar classes lined up along long corridors are still seen as an important part of education and training (Sanoff and Walden, 2012). School design should take into account appropriate theories and approaches that may be useful to students. The elements explained by these theories can be utilized in school design. Such a design will undoubtedly be different from today's school designs. Because the educational approaches that center the students and support their individual development have not yet been fully reflected in the school designs. Therefore, the aim of this study is to make some inferences from some student-centered theories and how appropriate physical spaces should be. The findings obtained through literature review will be shown on the table. In line with the results obtained, design recommendations for student-centered learning environments are given
