Abstract


TEACHING ROLES OF SPECIAL EDUCATION PARENTS IN DISTANCE EDUCATION

Special education is the type of education given by expert educators according to individual education programs in environments which is arranged according to the disability types of individuals who need this service. Along with the school, the most important partner in the development process of the special education student is the family. Studies have shown that the education given to children starts before birth and the process of being a role model comes to life after birth. In this research, which focuses on the teaching roles of parents in the distance education process, it is aimed to determine which teaching roles parents fulfill and what situations the encounter while fulfilling their teaching roles in the distance education process started in our country due to the Covid-19 epidemic that also has occurred worldwide. The case study design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. The study group of the research consists of 15 parents who have special education students/children in special education schools and special education classes in Kartal district of Istanbul in the 2020-2021 academic year, who want to participate voluntarily.The data were obtained using semi-structured interview technique and collected in the research were analyzed using the content analysis technique. Descriptive statistics, themes and codes were created according to the answers given by the parents to the questions that asked to them. Regarding the themes and codes, firstly, expert opinions were consulted, and then it was turned into a report in line with expert opinions. The findings were tabulated and interpreted. As a result of the research, it was determined that special education parents experienced uncertainty, confusion and inadequacy while fulfilling their teaching roles in the distance education process which has started in March 2020.
