Abstract


EXAMINATION OF THE STATE OF TRANSFER OF GEOGRAPHICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS TO DAILY LIFE: THE CASE OF BAĞCILAR DISTRICT

To what extent of the knowledge and skills obtained from geography lessons are used in daily life reveals the success of geography education. Every geographical knowledge and skill used in daily life is an indication of the realization of meaningful and permanent learning. The aim of this research is to determine the level of students' transfer of geographical knowledge and skills to daily life. Geographical knowledge and skills were questioned in terms of multiple variables and thus the level of use in daily life was investigated. The research model is constituted based on survey model. In this study, a questionnaire was developed to determine the students' transfer of geographical knowledge and skills to daily life. The sample of the research consists of students from secondary education schools selected from Bağcılar district of Istanbul in the 2018- 2019 academic year. In the process of determining the participants, the criteria of different school types, grade levels, different departments where education and training are received were taken as basis. According to the data obtained as a result of the research, it was determined that the students' level of transferring geographical knowledge and skills to daily life had an average of 3.35. This level is referred to as "Intermediate". In this direction, it has been concluded that the students' level of adaptation and implementation of geographical knowledge and skills in daily life is not at the desired sufficient level. There is no gender-based differentiation among students; It has been concluded that there is a differentiation according to the variables of grade levels, school types, the department they are studying and parents’ education levels. Nevertheless, it was concluded that the students had difficulty in comprehending the subjects of Physical Geography, and that they learned the subjects of Human and Economic Geography more easily and transferred them to daily life. In order to increase students' level of transferring geographical knowledge and skills to daily life, it is recommended to use contemporary teaching approaches, to give examples from the immediate environment, and to reduce geography education to all segments of society.
