Abstract


EMOTIONAL LABOR AND BURNOUT IN NURSES DURING THE PANDEMIC PERIOD

In the service sector, health services have a special importance due to their nature and working conditions.The pandemic, which has affected the whole world, has created anxiety and fear, and the conditions have become very difficult. Healthcare professionals offer this service under difficult conditions by facing many risks. The risk of transmission, uncertainties, fatal outcomes, and being away from the family have a significant impact on healthcare professionals. Patients who apply to the health institution are in fear and anxiety during the treatment and care process due to the uncertainties they encounter, the disease status and lack of information. Nurses are expected to be tolerant and understanding, to empathize and to support them psychologically while caring for their patients. In this sense, the concept of emotional labor has an important place in the nursing profession. With emotional labor, the nurse reassures the patient who is experiencing anxiety and anxiety and makes her feel better. Burnout is also an important phenomenon in professions that are in constant interaction with people. Nurses are trying to provide services with long and intense working hours, under stress and with insufficient resources. Under these conditions, they may experience processes such as fatigue, exhaustion, and depersonalization towards work. The burnout of nurses significantly affects their performance in the work environment and their work motivation. It is very important that the managers of the institution provide the necessary support to the nurses who try to reassure their patients with emotional labor but feel exhausted by many negative factors. In this sense, it will affect the motivation and performance of nurses that they feel valued in the institution and that they provide services in healthy working environments under appropriate conditions. It is very important that emotional labor and burnout are considered important by the managers of the institution, taking the necessary precautions and providing support to the employees during the pandemic period. This study was prepared as a compilation to evaluate emotional labor and burnout processes in nurses during the pandemic period
