Abstract


A Qualitative Research On Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Teaching Practice Course

The aim of the present study is to assess the practices performed by the senior students from Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Faculty of Education Department of School Teaching as part of the “Teaching Practices II” course at a primary school located in Menteşe, Muğla, Turkey. The research bears a great significance in that it assesses to what extent the students are aware of the objectives of the course and the quality of the practices performed by them. Conducted using phenomenological pattern, which is one of the qualitative research methods, the research was run with 8 students. The prospective teachers administered a total of 72 hours of classes for 12 weeks at their practicing schools, and their works practiced as part of teaching practices were assessed by professional class teachers and prospective teachers together at the end of this period. The 8 prospective teachers and 2 practicing teachers intended to improve the efficiency of the process by means of continuously sharing their observations with the prospective teachers. At the end of the process, the class teachers and the prospective class teachers were administered semi-structured interview form and asked 8 open-ended questions and asked to assess the quality and efficiency of the practices performed by the prospective teachers. To analyze the data obtained through interviewing the participants, ‘content analysis and descriptive analysis techniques’ were used. As a result of the findings obtained in the application teachers 'teacher candidates' performance; in their lectures, they observed that they had fulfilled the pre-lesson preparation process well and tried to use effective and different materials during the semester. It was concluded that prospective teachers tried to try different techniques and succeeded in many of them, they had difficulty in getting used to the classroom in the first weeks of classroom management and behavior control, but they successfully survived the adaptation process in the following weeks. Prospective teachers' evaluations about the process; They observed that they made lesson plan during the pre-lesson preparation process, they chose the method-techniques and materials according to the content of the course and the integrity of the subject, thereby increasing the effectiveness of the course. They stated that when the material was used, students' interest in the lesson increased, they encountered problems from time to time in classroom management and behavior control and they tried to solve these problems by applying the techniques they learned in the 'Class Management' course. Pre-service teachers stated that they enjoyed using different techniques instead of plain narrative, and they thought that the students had the same pleasure from the lessons and evaluated in this direction. To review the lesson plans prepared by the prospective teachers as part of the ‘Teaching Practices II’ course, it was concluded that the practices performed were in line with the objectives of each course (course objectives, method, techniques, as well as the compliance of the materials used, assessment criteria, etc.).
