Abstract


A RESEARCH ON THE GLOBAL SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY LEVELS OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

The aim of this research is to determine the level of global social responsibility of the students at Sakarya University; to investigate whether there is any variation in the perception of global social responsibility according to demographic characteristics such as faculty, department, class, sex, non-governmental organization membership and take a social responsibility course. In the research, a descriptive scanning model was used in quantitative research methods. The study universe consists of students from the Faculty of Political Sciences, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Business Administration of the University of Sakarya. The sample of the research was selected from probability based sampling method by chance clustering method. The “Global Social Responsibility Scale” developed by Başer and Kılınç (2015) and the demographic data form were used as data collection tools in the survey. The obtained data were analyzed by SPSS 18 packet program. Reliability analysis, factor analysis, one-way variance analysis and independent groups t-test techniques were used in the analysis of the data. The suitability of the data set for factor analysis was determined by the KMO and Bartlett Sphericity test. In this study, the data set's KMO statistic was found to be 0.867, which indicates that factor analysis can be applied to the data set. The result of Barlett's test of sphericity is x2=2493.941; p=0,000. These results indicate the acceptability of the applied factor analysis. As a result of the factor analysis, it is concluded that 30 factors related to the level of global social responsibility are collected under 4 factors. The four factors explain 49.765% of the total variance. The reliability of the scale used in the study was examined by the Cronbach Alpha internal consistency coefficient. The internal consistency coefficient for all of the scales was 0.702. As a result, the level of global social responsibility of university students seems to be moderate. In order to contribute to the development of global social responsibilities of university students, it is thought that the content of the social responsibility lessons should be watched and applied with practical examples. At the same time, membership in non-governmental organizations can be encouraged by emphasizing the role of non-governmental organizations and their functions on social responsibility. On the other hand, the fact that extracurricular activities are passed on to life can also contribute to this process.
